My latest series of paintings embodies the ebbs and flows that mark our days as we make our way through our lives. Sometimes, I am eager to explore, experience and create. Other times, especially living in this tropical climate, time can feel stagnant, paused. In those times, I too feel stagnant and paused. Unmotivated to explore externally I turn to look inward to explore the emotional landscapes that lurk below the surface. I process and analyze.
These phases that life moves through, motion and idleness, exploration and introspection, creation and stagnation all belong and are necessary. And if through it all I can slow down and pay attention, I find that magic lurks. When I get access to this magic, the brush moves by forces unseen, the mind loses itself in the flow of the moment, no longer analyzing, plotting nor demanding. This series of paintings is a representation of all of these phases. Moments marked by hues, shapes and saturations.

What captivates me most about Amelia's work are the layers. Not only the physical layers of paint and material she puts into each piece, but the visual and storytelling layers that unfold each time you look at a piece. Without any background or context, her paintings are beautifully abstract. You can see all sorts of things happening. Fascinating shapes and unique colour combinations and textures—reminiscent of Mexico as a whole, where she draws a lot of inspiration.
If you are lucky enough, though, to have some sort of glimpse inside her minds eye or understanding of her inspiration behind a piece, the layers that unfold are astounding. Shape, or even figures, you didn't realize were there originally emerge. Emotions are conjured with each added detail, the intrigue deepens. For me, Amelia's work is simultaneously modern and nostalgic; no ordinary feat to achieve on a canvas.
